Beloit Memorial held the ball for the final 1 minutes of overtime to set up a game-winning shot.

The plan worked to perfection.

John Rodriguez took a pass and hit the game-winning layup with two seconds left in overtime to give the Purple Knights a 49-47 victory over visiting Janesville Craig in Big Eight Conference boys basketball action Saturday night.

The Cougars fell to 2-4 in league play, while the Purple Knights improved to 2-4.

The game was tied at 44-all at the end of regulation. It was tied at 47 when Beloit took possession with about 1:30 left. Despite Craig’s defensive pressure, Beloit maintained possession until the final shot.

“We didn’t shoot the ball as well as we normally do,” said Craig coach Ben McCormick. “(Beloit) just made a nice pass for that layup.”

Blake McCann led the Cougars with 18 points. Jacob Ngobi added 16.
