Parker's Perkins, Craig's Benton win Steck wrestling titles
Janesville Craig's Keeanu Benton and Janesville Parker's Brett Perkins each took home first-place titles from the 2017 E.H. Stech Invitational at West Allis Central High on Saturday.
Benton improved to 11-0 this season by winning the 285-pound weight class title. The junior pinned South Milwaukee's Raul Benavides in 1:05 in the championship match.
Perkins hiked his record to 18-0 with a 126-pound championship. Perkins worked his way to a 5-2 decision over Lucas Benn of Mukwonago in the title match.
“It was awesome to watch him,” Craig coach Daniel Jackson said. “The guy he beat was also in the honorable mention category of the ranks, as is Brett. He just turned in a different gear.”
Craig finished sixth in the 24-team field.
“Our goal was to finish in the top four,” Craig coach Mark Mullen said. “We came close. We finished behind schools that have really strong programs right now.
“Our kids got in a lot of matches and got some good experience.”
Craig's Ethan Smith lost in the 145-pound championship match by one point to Coleman's Ty Blanchard. It was Smith's first loss after 12 straight wins.
Craig's Mayson Maclennon finished third at 113, and teammate Nate Ellis was fourth at 138.
“Mayson had to wrestle a couple of wrestlers who went to state last year,” Mullen said.”Coming in third in that field was impressive.”
